In Memoriam - David William Lepard (1937-2016)

[photo] It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a former member of the Department of Physics (1967-1982), Dr. David William Lepard. He is remembered fondly by his former students and co-workers. Among the courses that were introduced by Dr. Lepard were Physics 330: Electricity and Magnetism II (in 1967/68 academic year), a precursor to our current PHYS 3P35/3P36, and Physics 430: Classical Field Theory (in 1969/70 academic year). We wish to express our sincere condolences to the family.

LEPARD, Dr. David William - November 1, 1937 - April 1, 2016. We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our Father, David, on Friday, April 1, 2016. David cherished life and will be greatly missed by his son and daughter, Sean and Catherine as well as his sisters and brother, nieces, nephews and friends. David was a life-long achiever and a man of many talents. One of six children, David was exceptionally bright. With a strong aptitude for mathematics and sciences he earned a scholarship to study at The University of Toronto, Victoria College where he graduated with his PhD in Physics. It was here he met his wife, Bonnie who remained the love of his life. David was a Professor of Physics at Brock University in St. Catharines where he and Bonnie settled to raise their two children. When Bonnie prematurely passed away in 1982 of a stroke, David changed careers, moving to Calgary to be a scientific programmer for the Geological Survey of Canada. He embraced an active life in Calgary, first embarking on 40K cross country skiing expeditions in Kananaskis Country then developing a passion for Tai Chi. David competed in Tai Chi events domestically as well as traveling multiple times to participate in competitions in China. David loved his Tai Chi and has many medals to show for it. In 2013, David was diagnosed with a form of MDS, a cancer of the blood. Throughout the progression of this disease he maintained his love for life, never complaining and always seeing the positive. We are astonished at his strength and spirit. To honour his memory, there will be a service held in Toronto at MORLEY BEDFORD FUNERAL HOME , 159 Eglinton Avenue West (2 stoplights west of Yonge Street), on Wednesday, April 13, at 2:00pm. Memorial donations may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, Suite 804 - 2 Lansing Square, Toronto, Ontario, M2J 4P8.

This obituary was published in National Post on April 9, 2016.
