28th International Physics Olympiad

July 13 - 21, 1997, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

The Event

The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is a week long event. Approximately 300 participants from 60 countries will participate in two physics exams as well as several cultural activities.

Background

The IPhO was founded in 1967. Until the early 80's only eastern European countries participated. In 1997, the Olympiad will be held in Sudbury, Canada. Organizers expect that as many as 60 countries will participate. Each country is entitled to send a team of 5 participants to the Olympiad. These students must not have attended a post secondary institution and must be less than 20 years of age.

The students will participate in 2 separate exams, their performance in each of these will determine their rank. The first test is a 5 hour theoretical exam. The questions for these exams must be drawn from the prearranged syllabus of topics . The difficulty of these exams are often compared to that of a Ph.D. entrance exam.

The practical exam is 5 hours in duration. Like the theory exam the problems are drawn from an agreed upon source of topics.

The exams for the 28th IPhO are being prepared by scientists at the University of British Columbia. The event will take place in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
