Mark Chagall was from Vitebsk
A prominent XX century artist, Mark Chagall, was born in Vitebsk.
More than that, Vitebsk and the Jewish town life left an indelible
imprint on Chagall, and are very much at the heart of his art.
His autobiography, My Life, first published in 1947 in
Russian, and still available at the libraries and on
amazon.com, contains vivid
descriptions of life in Vitebsk. The cover page of Vitebsk Amol,
the Vitebsk izkor book, has a drawing by Chagall that
he donated to the project.
