The number of full-time faculty members in the department has fluctuated
between six and seven since 1968. With 14 undergraduate courses and one or two
graduate courses, along with one individual on sabbatical in many years,
additional teaching help has been needed for most of the years of the
departmental operation. These additional appointments took the form of
sessional lectures and /or research associates. The individuals were
Michael Cowan (1969-1973), Nan-Sang Ho (1978-1979), Per Anderson
(1980-1981), Neil McKay (1984-1986), Henry Zaleski (1989-1992), Minette
Mohan (1993-1994, Sadhana Sharma (1993-1994), Guy Quirion (1994-1998),
Gerald Moran (1999) and Mesfin Woldeyohannes (2001-2002). We have also
relied on help from other departments. Stuart Rothstein (Department of
Chemistry) has taught Quantum Mechanics 3P70 and Frank Fueten (Earth
Sciences ) has taught the planetary portion of the Astronomy 1F00 course
in recent years.
What follows is a summary of the hiring of the departmental faculty
members. For details on dates of all faculty, staff, research associates
and sessional lecturers see Appendix 2. For additional information on
faculty and staff, see Appendix 3.
- 1965
- Frans Koffyberg was hired in the Department of Chemistry as an
Associate Professor of Chemistry.
- 1966
- Eugene Cherniak (Head of Chemistry) hired John Black as a Lecturer
in Physics. (A standard practice if someone was hired whose Ph.D. was
being completed.)
- 1967
- John Black completed his Ph.D. and was appointed as Assistant
Professor of Physics (1967-2001). The same year Frans Koffyberg
(1965-1993) was appointed Associate Professor of Physics and three new
appointments were made, David Lepard (1967-1982), John A. Moore
(1967-1993), and Ramesh Shukla (1967-2001.)
- 1968
- Colin Plint (1968-1991) was hired as Professor and Chair of the
Physics Department. Unfortunately, for the department, the University
recognized his strong organizational skills, and he was appointed Dean of
the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1969 leaving a vacancy in the
department chair.
- 1969
- Colin Plint's replacement as head of the department was Geoffrey
Kidson. He left the department in 1979.
- 1971
