Derek Vaillancourt
B.Sc. 2017, M.Sc. 2019

I graduated from the Honours Physics Co-op program in 2017. As part of the co-op program I had one work term doing web development at the Ministry of Transportation and another work term as a Systems Engineering Co-op Student with L3 Wescam.

I wasn't done with Brock University yet, so I moved to the Department of Mathematics to obtain my Master of Mathematics, which I completed in 2019. I worked under Dr. Anco on my project, "Integrable Peakon Equations from an Improved Method Based on a Modified AKNS Scheme". A copy should be available in the Math department if anybody is interested in a little light reading about differential equations and soliton waves.

After I completed my Master of Science I stayed around Brock as a teaching assistant in the Math department until the COVID pandemic.

Luckily I quickly found work assisting with a software conversion project at a local mutual insurance company, BCM Insurance Company in Welland. BCM Insurance Company has been named a Great Place to Work (https://www.greatplacetowork.ca) both in Canada and in the Financial Services and Insurance sector every year since 2023. I was able to use the software and technical writing skills I learned through my classes and work terms at Brock to assist the Underwriting department, and last year I was made the Underwriting Technical Administrator.

I have also been keeping my mind sharp learning French, Spanish, and Mandarin with Duolingo.

My wife Amanda and I welcomed our first daughter Elanor in the spring of 2021 and another daughter, Katherine in the autumn of 2023. We are living quite happily in Smithville in Niagara, and I often point out Schmon Tower to my daughters when we visit my parents in St. Catherines.

I will end with a quote I remember from Dr. Sternin. During a lecture of second year Analog Electronics I remember Dr. Sternin telling us "I can't promise you will earn money or fame from studying Physics. What I can promise you, is that you will obtain a more intimate knowledge of the workings of our universe."

It is this deeper understanding of our universe that I remain tremendously thankful for, and I hope to pass this on to my daughters and inspire wonder in their lives each day.
