Previous: The Physics Program in the
Courses in Physics were offered in the early days of the University under
the sponsorship of the Department of Chemistry. An independent Department
of Physics and a three-year pass degree program was first in operation for
the 1967-68 calendar year. Appointment of a Chairman and the introduction
of a four-year honors program were initiated in the 1968-69 calendar year.
Copies of the relevant portions of the Calendars [1] are in
Appendix A for
1964/65 to 1971/72.
- 1964/65
- All students took an introductory science class, Science 100,
offered by John Hart (Director of Science)
- 1965/66
- Frans Koffyberg introduced Physics 200: Classical Mechanics and
Physical Optics, for year 2 science students.
- 1966/67
- Eugene Cherniak and Frans Koffyberg introduced Physical
Science110. This course was intended for first year science students. John
Black introduced Physics 300: Electricity and Magnetism, for second year
science students. Due to the short set up time the Berkeley Physics
Experimental Packages were used in the labs.
- 1967/68
- Note that all courses in 1967 and 1968 were full courses. Frans
Koffyberg taught Physics 220, Introductory Mechanics and Physical Optics.
John Black taught Physics 230, Electricity and Magnetism I. A new full
laboratory component, half of which was electronics, was introduced.
Ramesh Shukla introduced Physics 240: Thermodynamics. David Lepard
introduced Physics 330: Electricity and Magnetism II. This course had a
lab component. . Ramesh Shukla introduced Physics 320: Classical
Mechanics. John Moore introduced Physics 350: Quantum Mechanics John
Moore introduced Physics 360: Modern Physics. This course had a lab
component.
- 1968/69
- Ramesh Shukla introduced Physics 450: Quantum Mechanics. Ramesh
Shukla, Colin Plint and Frans Koffyberg. Introduced Physics 470: Solid
State Physics. Physics 490 and Physics 491 were first offered by members
of the Department.
- 1969/70
- David Lepard introduced Physics 430: Classical Field Theory.
