How to analyze the forces acting on an object
(in four easy steps!)
- Draw a diagram of the real situation
- Identify the relevant objects/agents; make a list of them (the "system list"); circle the object that you wish to focus your attention on
- Draw an interaction diagram
- Draw a free-body diagram
Let's try out the process for each of the following problems.
Page 128, Problem 29
Your car is sitting in the parking lot.
Page 128, Problem 31
Your car is slowing to a stop from a high speed.
Page 128, Problem 33
An ascending elevator, hanging from a cable, is coming to a stop.
Page 129, Problem 52
An elevator, suspended by a single cable, has just left the tenth floor and is speeding up as it descends toward the ground floor.
Page 129, Problem 54
A jet plane is speeding down the runway during takeoff. Air resistance is not negligible.
Page 129, Problem 56
A skier is going down a $20^{\circ}$ slope. A horizontal headwind is blowing in the skier's face. Friction is small, but not zero.
Page 129, Problem 60
A person on a bridge throws a rock straight down toward the water. The rock has just been released.
Page 129, Problem 62
A heavy box is in the back of a truck. The truck is accelerating to the right. Apply your analysis to the box.
